Knowing stroke risk factors and making positive changes in your lifestyle and habits can greatly reduce your risk of stroke.

Risk factors listed on the National Stroke Association website include:

Controllable stroke risk factors:

  • Alcohol Use
  • Atrial Fibrillation
  • Atherosclerosis
  • Diabetes
  • High Blood Pressure
  • High Cholesterol
  • Physical Inactivity
  • Obesity
  • Tobacco Use and Smoking

Uncontrollable stroke risk factors:

  • Age
  • Family History
  • Fibromuscular Dysplasia
  • Gender
  • Patent Foramen Ovale (PFO or hole in the heart)
  • Previous Stroke or TIA
  • Race
