Medical Oncology

What is medical oncology and hematology?

Hematology & OncologyFollowing a diagnosis of cancer or suspicion of cancer, patients are referred directly to a medical oncologist and hematologist for further evaluation. A medical oncologist/hematologist specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of all types of cancers and diseases of the blood.

In the event of a cancer diagnosis, your oncologist becomes your primary care provider and oversees the design of your treatment plan, referrals to other cancer specialists, and overall coordination of your care throughout your cancer treatment, recovery, and follow-up.

Chemotherapy and infusion services
Medical oncology also includes administration of chemotherapy and infusion services. Harrison’s Oncology program offers advanced chemotherapy and infusion services in peaceful, comfortable outpatient settings at both our Harrison HealthPartners Bremerton and Poulsbo Hematology and Oncology clinics.

Infusion therapy is fluid or medication delivered directly into the bloodstream intravenously (an IV). Treatments prescribed by your oncologist are prepared by our Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD), designed specifically for the unique needs of each cancer patient.

Advanced medications, treatments, and infusion therapies include:

  • biotherapies
  • growth factors
  • hydration
  • blood products
  • cytotoxic drugs
  • antibiotics
  • monoclonal antibodies
  • targeted molecular therapies

Chemotherapy and infusion services are provided by highly trained oncology nurses, most of whom are nationally certified by the Oncology Nursing Society (ONS).

Our patients have access to the most up-to-date treatments and, if appropriate, may access state-of-the-art clinical trials through our participation in regional and national cooperative groups.

When you have cancer, you need the most advanced care you can find, close to home. Harrison is the cancer care leader on the Kitsap and Olympic peninsulas. Here, you’ll find hope at every turn.
